Petrified Forest

A submerged teddy bear in the water.

Redcar beach at low tide 21 feb 2021

With all the recent storms the top layer of Redcar beach has been removed to reveal the 6000 year old petrified forest beneath the beach. This has really fascinated me and I have visited the site twice. There are some tree stumps and lots of fallen branch’s. Underfoot the forest feels soft and giving like walking on a deep carpet, it is the colour of rich auburn peat, the dense texture of redwood bark. I recognise some of the ancient bark, it’s horizontal stripes remind me of the cherry tree bark in Saltburn woods. I wondered if they were related and shared a common ancestry, and what an ancient woodland full of cherry tree blossom would look and smell like? I am curious about the human and animals that lived then.
